Thank You!

James and Lisa Cox donated this book cart to St. Mary students.  Primary classes send their books to the library in these carts. Thank you, Cox family!

iKids and Sleep

If your iKid is having problems falling to sleep at night, it could be from looking at a tablet screen (or other backlit device) too close to bedtime. Those screens prevent/slow down the production of melatonin, a natural hormone that aids sleep. Solution?  "Turn off screens 2 hours before bedtime.  Read a book or play a game."

Voki--Read!

Does It Matter If Students Read Daily?

  • A study of 174,000 students in 32 countries revealed that time spent reading books is the single best predictor of academic achievement. (Programme for International Student Assessment; Kirsch, et. al., 2002)
  • 35 minutes a day is the point at which students achieve the most growth for the least amount of time spent reading.
  • A considerable amount of research involving pupils of all ages indicates that independent reading practice is absolutely necessary to build vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, writing, and higher order thinking skills. (Anderson, Wilson, & Filding, 1988;  Baker, Simmons, & Kameenui, 1995; Cunningham & Stanovich, 1998; Greenfield, 2009, Guthrie, Wigfield, Metsala, Cox, 1999; National Endowment for the Arts, 2007; Reitsma, 1988)
  • Please see the Why Read infographic listed under Documents on the right column of this page. (You may need to scroll down the page.)

I Keep Bookmarks--St. MaryTechnology/Media Bookmarks

  • Tech/media students use many of these links in class.  Students can sometimes work on lessons from home using these links, e.g., Class Chatter blog (7th an 8th grades).  Students have passwords if required by a website, e.g., Class Chatter, Typing Web.

  • The keyboarding section includes Typing Web, our primary typing lesson software for Grades 3-8. Additional student practice at home is recorded online and can be accessed by the teacher.  Students who aren't at the WPM goal for their grade need additional practice. If Internet access is not available at home, please arrange to have students practice before or after school.

  • Words Per Minute Goals 3rd Grade--15 WPM     4th Grade--20 WPM     5th Grade--25 WPM     6th Grade--30 WPM    7th Grade--35 WPM    8th Grade--40 WPM

  • Numerous typing lesson and game options are available at I Keep Bookmarks / Keyboarding to improve keyboarding accuracy and speed.
  • Students are virtually always able to redo their projects to earn additional, usually maximum, points during a grading period.

  • Please let me know whenever I can be of more help to your children! I'm at St. Marys on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Eagle Book---a unique gift idea!

What is an Eagle Book?
An Eagle Book is a book that is donated to the St. Mary Catholic School Library in honor of a child or someone special to you.

  • to celebrate a birthday, a new school year, Christmas, or any important event
  • to honor the memory of someone dear

The Eagle Book program helps to add quality books that enrich the curriculum and build lifelong readers. All students will benefit and your student will be honored!

How will everyone know which book my child donated?

  • A special bookplate with the child’s (or honoree’s) name is permanently placed inside the Eagle Book.
  • The honored students will be the first to check out the Eagle Books purchased in their name. When the books are returned, they will be available for all students to check out and enjoy.
  • Also, the honoree/family honorees will be thanked by name in the school newsletter.

How much does an Eagle Book cost?

  • $13.50
  • This purchases a book that has an extra strong library binding and is needed to fill holes in the library collection. It can also reflect a special interest of the person you're honoring.  (If a particular book is picked, the price could vary a few dollars.)

What books will be purchased?

  • Suggested books will be listed here and updated periodically.
  • If you wish to purchase a book of special interest to your honoree, Mrs. Roberts will be happy to research the interest and find books in the reading range you request.

Thank you so much for your generosity!
